How to set spend limits and alerts on OpenAI and Anthropic

5 minute read · Updated 3 October 2026

API spend can grow quietly, because nobody sees a bill per person. Both OpenAI and Anthropic let you set monthly spend limits, and setting them takes a few minutes. Here is how they work, checked against each provider's documentation on 3 October 2026.

OpenAI API: organisation and project limits

OpenAI supports monthly spend limits for the whole organisation and for each project. A limit can simply watch spend and send alerts, or you can enforce it as a hard limit, so API requests fail once spend reaches it.

  • Who can set them: organisation owners can set organisation and project limits. Project owners can set limits for their own project.
  • Organisation limit: in your organisation settings, open Limits.
  • Project limit: in your organisation settings, choose the project, then open its Limits page to set the monthly spend limit and notification threshold.
  • Alerts: a new project limit creates an alert at 100%. Add earlier alerts, such as 50% and 80%, so you hear about rising spend before the limit.

Decide deliberately whether each limit should only alert or should stop requests. A hard limit protects the budget but can interrupt an app your team relies on.

Anthropic: organisation and workspace limits

In the Claude Console, an organisation spend limit sets the maximum monthly cost for API usage. It cannot be higher than the cap for your usage tier.

  • Workspace limits: you can set a spend limit and rate limits for each workspace. A workspace limit must be lower than the organisation's limit, and if you leave it unset the organisation limit applies.
  • Both apply: Anthropic checks the workspace and organisation limits on every request.
  • Keys follow workspaces: API keys belong to the workspace they were created in and cannot be moved, so give each app its own workspace if you want a separate budget for it.

A simple setup that works

  • Give each app or team its own OpenAI project or Anthropic workspace.
  • Set a monthly limit on each one, a little above normal spend.
  • Add early alerts so the right person hears before the limit is reached.
  • Set an organisation limit as a final safety net.
  • Review the limits when spend changes for a good reason, such as a new feature going live.

Common questions

Does an OpenAI spend limit stop API requests?

Only if you enforce it as a hard limit. Otherwise it watches spend and sends alerts, and requests carry on.

Can each Anthropic workspace have its own budget?

Yes. Each workspace can have its own spend limit, as long as it is lower than the organisation's limit.
